August is here and that means it is prime time for beach trips, hiking adventures, and enjoying the great outdoors. It also means the sweltering hot sun will be around. Going outside can be a lot of fun, but when the sun takes its toll, our bodies will begin to dehydrate. The key to a healthy and fun summer is staying hydrated. Here are a few tips to help you out.

  • Drink a Lot of Water

This first one should be obvious, but it’s very easy to get caught up in what we are doing and not even realize how much we need water. Drinking water regularly throughout the day is one of the best ways to stay hydrated. If our bodies are getting water consistently, they will feel much better.

  • Avoid Soda and Alcohol

This tip goes hand in hand with the first one. Drink water and less of these types of drinks. When you’re at a BBQ or at the beach it is easy to grab what is most convenient. Sadly, what is convenient isn’t always what is best for you. Soda and alcoholic beverages are notorious for dehydrating the body. Soda’s high sugar content along with caffeine is a bad combination when it comes to hydration. Alcohol has a similar affect. Make sure you are always consuming plenty of water.

  • Eat More Fruits & Vegetables

Fruits and Vegetables aren’t just healthy for you because of the vitamins and minerals they contain, but also because they are full of water. The human body is roughly 60 to 70 percent water. Many fruits and vegetables are 85 percent water or more! They are incredible at hydrating people during hot summer months. So, instead of eating salty snacks or sugary junk food you can munch on some juicy and delicious fruits and vegetables.

  • Supplement Water With a Sports Drink

Clean water is safe for the body and great for quick hydration, but if you are engaging in physical activity out in the sun it is also a good idea to consume a sports drink. Water alone can’t replenish all the electrolytes the body loses through sweat. So, if you are going on a hike or a bike ride it’s a good idea to bring a bottle of water along with a sports drink with the proper nutrients to help keep you going. The reason why you don’t want to drink sport drinks alone is because they often have a high concentration of sugar which can decrease the body’s water storage capacity.

  • Take Breaks

Last, but not least, take breaks! Listening to your body is very important for staying healthy. If you are experiencing headaches, dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, or if you feel light-headed you may be dehydrated. Don’t hesitate to sit down, grab a water bottle, and take a break. The last thing you want is to pass out or get terrible cramps. Drink water before, during, and after physical activity out in the hot sun to prevent dehydration. And if I didn’t say it enough, take a few breaks in between.
